John J. Vander Wert, Jr. was born on December 6, 1928, at the Mercy Clinic in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He was the oldest of 5 youngsters that had been born to John E. and Henrietta (Steenhoek) Vander Wert. John was raised on the Vander Wert family farm east of Pella, Iowa and in the course of his early yrs appreciated working with animals and equipment.
